Iqaluit, Nunavut (October 10, 2024) – Government of Nunavut officials are working diligently towards fulfilling a key 2023-2026 Business Plan priority: a strategic realignment of the GN’s infrastructure, land development, and local government branches to enhance program and service delivery.
As of April 1, 2025, significant restructuring will be implemented within the departments of Community and Government Services, Economic Development and Transportation, and the Government Liaison Office (GLO) of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs.
Two new departments will emerge from this transformation: the Department of Community Services and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut. Cabinet has approved the department names, marking a pivotal step in this organizational evolution.
Hon. David Akeeagok will be the Minister of Community Services, which will cater to the needs of communities, including economic development, lands and planning, consumer affairs, safety services, emergency management, and the GLO function.
Hon. David Joanasie will be the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut, which will provide support to government departments, including infrastructure, information technology, transportation, and procurement.
“I am pleased to announce this integral step in the Government of Nunavut’s growth and development,” stated Premier P.J. Akeeagok. “Restructuring our departments is a strategic move that allows us to better deliver services across the territory. Nunavummiut wanted a one-stop shop to access government services, and we are working towards that goal. The Departments of Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut and Community Services will be better positioned to meet the growing needs of our government, hamlets, and all Nunavummiut.”
This restructuring initiative ensures that no jobs will be lost, emphasizing a seamless transition for all personnel involved.
