Iqaluit, Nunavut (May 31, 2024) – Today, Minister of Human Resources David Akeeagok announced a significant salary increase that will affect the majority of Government of Nunavut (GN) employees.
Effective September 30, 2024, GN employees in the Nunavut Employees Union (NEU), excluded and senior management groups will receive a nine percent (9%) salary increase. In addition, an extra two percent (2%) will be applied to more senior and specialized roles (pay ranges 18-25) to allow for role progression and incentives for employees to take on added responsibilities.
“The increase to salaries is substantial and will ensure the GN is a competitive employer,” said Minister Akeeagok. “This will help the GN retain and attract talent, strengthen local economies and support Nunavummiut families.”
“The NEU is delighted that the GN is beginning to address these known wage gaps. We look forward to working with the GN in future negotiations to avoid falling behind again,” said NEU President Jason Rochon.
The salary increase is a result of a recent compensation review that identified the need for structural changes. The review included benchmarking across Canada and within Nunavut. The initiative was led by the Department of Human Resources in collaboration with the Department of Finance.
