Premier welcomes Prime Minister Mark Carney

On the swearing-in of Mark Carney as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister, Premier P.J. Akeeagok today issued the following statement:

“I look forward to working with Prime Minister Mark Carney and his new Cabinet, which includes ministers who have worked in partnership with Nunavut. We are at a critical juncture in Nunavut and Canada’s history. Now is the time for bold, transformative, nation-building measures to unlock the North’s full potential.

I also want to thank Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for being a friend to Inuit and Nunavut, and for leading with an eye to reconciliation. During his term, he worked in partnership with our government and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. to ratify the Nunavut Lands and Resources Devolution Agreement and the Nunavut Implementation Plan Agreement, getting us closer to realizing our Elders’ vision of Nunavut.

Prime Minister Trudeau was also responsible for numerous Inuit-led initiatives, such as the Tallurutiup Imanga Marine Conservation Area and SINAA Agreements, which conserve our waters while creating meaningful jobs and critical infrastructure in communities. His government implemented measures that helped children and families tackle the rising cost of living, such as the Inuit Child First Initiative and the $10/day Childcare Agreement.

I hope Prime Minister Carney will visit our beautiful territory soon to see firsthand the opportunities in Nunavut to advance Team Canada’s efforts in bolstering Arctic sovereignty and security.”
