Iqaluit, Nunavut (March 31, 2025) – The Government of Nunavut (GN) is launching the Namminiqsurniq Scholarship to help students gain the skills needed for the positions that will be transferred to Nunavut as part of the Nunavut Lands and Resources Devolution Agreement.
The Namminiqsurniq Scholarship Program will be available to 10 students annually, offering scholarships of $10,000. Applications for the scholarship will open on April 1, 2025, and close on June 30, 2025.
The scholarship is open to Nunavut students pursuing Environmental Science, Earth Science, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Assessment, Resource Economics, Environmental Policy, Geoscience, or Political Science. Other fields of study relevant to devolution-related roles may be considered.
“This scholarship will help Nunavummiut, particularly our young students, get the necessary education needed for the jobs that will shape our territory’s future,” said Premier P.J. Akeeagok. “With the transfer of power from Ottawa to Nunavut that comes with the Nunavut Lands and Resources Devolution Agreement, we will need Nunavummiut to have the expertise to manage our lands and resources. I encourage all Nunavut students to consider pursuing studies in areas such as Environmental Science, Resource Economics and Political Science. Nunavut needs you in these critical fields to succeed as a territory.”
To be eligible for the Namminiqsurniq Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
• Be enrolled in full-time study at an accredited post-secondary institution.
• Be enrolled in one of the approved programs listed above.
• Be a resident of Nunavut or meet eligibility under the Nunavut Agreement.
Priority will be given to Nunavut Inuit.
Scholarships will be disbursed prior to the commencement of the Fall 2025 semester.

The GN, the Government of Canada, and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. signed the Nunavut Lands and Resources Devolution Agreement on January 18, 2024, transferring decision-making from Ottawa to Nunavut. The GN is committed to developing a highly skilled, Nunavut-based workforce to manage these responsibilities.
