The GN celebrates construction completion of Kivalliq Long-term Care Centre

Rankin Inlet, Nunavut (January 14, 2024) – Today, Government of Nunavut (GN) Minister of Health John Main and Minister of Community and Government Services (CGS) David Joanasie, together with Sakku Investments Corporation president David Kakuktinniq, proudly announced the completion of construction for the Kivalliq Long-Term Care Centre in Rankin Inlet.

Kivalliq Long-term Care Centre

As a part of the federal and territorial investment of over $194 million for critical infrastructure across Nunavut, the Kivalliq Long-Term Care Centre is a cornerstone of the Katujjiluta mandate priority, Aging with Dignity. This state-of-the-art, level 4 and 5 facility is designed to provide specialized care for Elders with complex health needs, including dementia. With 24 beds, it ensures that Elders can receive top-quality care close to home while honoring and celebrating Inuit culture. The centre stands as a testament to the values, history, and heritage of Nunavummiut.

“Today's completion of the Kivalliq Seniors Long Term Care Centre marks a significant achievement for the Hamlet of Rankin Inlet and all of Nunavut,” said Government of Canada Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Nate Erskine-Smith. “This new facility will provide elders with the care and support they need to age with dignity, deliver a lasting impact on the well-being of Nunavummiut.”

“A cornerstone of the Katujjiluta mandate is to ensure that our Elders are able to age with dignity by receiving the essential care they need closer to home,” said Premier P.J. Akeeagok. “The construction of Kivalliq Long-term Care Centre is a significant step towards achieving this goal.”

“The completion of the building of the Kivalliq Long-Term Care Centre is a major milestone for health care in Nunavut. Soon, for the first time, we will offer top-level care to our Elders within the territory, allowing them to age with dignity in a familiar and culturally grounded environment,” said Minister Main. Today would not have been possible without the sustained efforts and contributions of our partners. The completion of this facility shows the value and results that can be achieved through Piliriqatigiinniq—working together for a shared purpose.

For the next few months, the facility will undergo a commissioning phase to prepare for the safe admission of Elders, ensuring that all systems are fully operational, and staff are ready to provide the highest standard of care starting this spring.
