Kimmirut, Nunavut (March 14, 2025) – The Government of Nunavut (GN) is proud to announce the official grand opening of the Kimmirut Air Terminal Building, marking a key milestone in the expansion and modernization of Nunavut’s airport infrastructure.
The Kimmirut Air Terminal Building is the first of six new state-of-the-art facilities built to enhance Nunavut’s airport network. These modern terminals will offer more spacious, comfortable, and efficient facilities made to benefit all airport users.
Economic Development and Transportation Minister David Akeeagok was joined by community members, partners, and government officials at today’s opening ceremony and community feast to celebrate this achievement.
“Kimmirut is the first of six air terminal buildings built under our government’s leadership, and I am very proud of the work we have done to make this a reality,” said Minister Akeeagok. “I thank our partners at the Department of Community and Government Services and Transport Canada for their support. Most importantly, I thank the people of Kimmirut for celebrating this milestone – this facility belongs to you, and I know it will serve the community well for years to come.”
“Today marks a major milestone for the people of Kimmirut as we officially open this new air terminal building,” said Community and Government Services Minister David Joanasie, MLA for South Baffin. “This more modern facility will serve my constituency for years to come. It is an honour that my department played a critical role in making it happen.”
“By investing in transportation infrastructure, like the Kimmirut Air Terminal Building, our government is supporting and promoting economic growth, creating new job opportunities, and ensuring greater connectivity for Northerners,” said federal Transport and Internal Trade Minister Anita Anand.
Following Kimmirut, new air terminal buildings in Chesterfield Inlet, Naujaat, Whale Cove, Kugluktuk, and Rankin Inlet will begin operations throughout the spring and summer of 2025.
